| The Reel Cinema: The building itself has a story to tell... it dates back to 1810, when it was originally built for the purpose of being a theatre, which was named the Theatre Royal. It was said to be built so skilfully, that it was thought to be fireproof. However, that theory was proved to be wrong when in June 1878 a disastrous internal fire tore through the building. The building was restored and reopened in January 1879, with a 2400 person capacity. It was then demolished in 1937 to be rebuilt and reopened as the ABC cinema. The building is one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth and only one of very few to survive the First and Second World War bombings over Plymouth. The building plays home to many interesting characters from the past, some could be the occupiers of the three burial grounds found within the Reel Cinema building. It’s definitely a very atmospheric building with characters’ that have a real story to tell. Why not join us on our investigation to discover more? |
